Events for September 2018
St. Michaels Maryland Business Association
Apr 14 - Mar 31    New Exhibition: Kent’s Carvers and Clubs: Guides, Gunners and Co-Ops
Kent’s Carvers and Clubs: Guides, Gunners and Co-Ops is a new waterfowling exhibition opening Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md.

The exhibition shares the stories of Maryland’s Kent County carvers and hunting clubs through a collection of decoys, oral histories, historic photographs, and other artifacts.

In the Rock Hall area of Kent County, virtually every young man grew up learning to hunt waterfowl in the early 1900s. That intimate knowledge of birds, their habits and their habitat translated into a marketable skill as gunning became the pastime of the wealthy. Rich photo documentation from the 1930s and 40s illustrate the camaraderie of the well-to-do business and professional men who flocked to Kent’s gunning shores to spend icy mornings in booby blinds, awaiting the arrival of ducks and geese and warm evenings by the club woodstove, where they feasted on local delicacies.

Oral history excerpts reveal the stories of hardworking guides, who found vital supplemental seasonal income. Captain John Glenn fashioned hand-chopped decoys from his Piney Neck home, “Decoy Farm,” and began to work with other local carvers to supply a wide variety of stool. While the “Rock Hall School of Carvers” was likely influenced by the work of Susquehanna Flats decoy makers, Kent carver Charlie Joiner learned directly from legendary Havre de Grace carver R. Madison Mitchell, and befriended the Ward brothers of Crisfield, developing his own distinct and notable style.

“Kent County’s bountiful waterfowl population and picturesque shorelines drew gentlemen hunters from the cities to organized gunning clubs, especially along the shores near Rock Hall and Eastern Neck,” said CBMM Collections Manager Jenifer Dolde, curator of the exhibition. “Knowledgeable local men served as guides, savvy property owners leased their land for clubs, and skillful Kent carvers created co-ops to craft decoys for the rigs of neighbors and club members.”

“Kent County has an enduring waterfowling culture—one that continues to flourish in the fields, necks and islands of the deeply-rural region,” said CBMM Chief Curator Pete Lesher. “We’re grateful for the support of this exhibition to be able to explore this important part of Chesapeake history with our guests.”

Kent’s Carvers and Clubs: Guides, Gunners and Co-Ops  is generously sponsored by Judy and Henry Stansbury, and the world’s leading decoy auction firm, Guyette & Deeter. Entry to the exhibition is free for CBMM members or with general admission. Kent’s Carvers and Clubs will travel to the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, Md. November 9-11, 2018, and return to CBMM’s Waterfowling Building through March 31, 2019.

Established in 1965, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a world-class maritime museum dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay, with the values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship guiding its mission. Serving more than 70,000 guests each year, CBMM’s campus includes a floating fleet of historic boats and numerous indoor and outdoor spaces, situated in a park-like, waterfront setting along the Miles River and St Michaels harbor. Charitable gifts to CBMM’s annual fund help support the non-profit’s exhibition, education, and restoration programs, with online giving and more information at cbmm.org/donate.

From now through October, 2018, CBMM’s guests can experience the log-hull restoration of the 1889 bugeye, Edna E. Lockwood, with more information at ednalockwood.org.

May 19 - Mar 17    CBMM - Exhibit - Exploring the Chesapeake--Mapping the Bay
Exploring the Chesapeake--Mapping the Bay, a new exhibition opening Saturday, May 19 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md., will look at the different ways the Chesapeake Bay has been portrayed over time through mapping and charting. The exhibition is generously sponsored by Ellen and Norm Plummer and the Maryland State Arts Council, and continues in CBMM’s Steamboat Building through March 17, 2019.
The exhibition will view changes in maps over time as an expression of what people were seeking in the Chesapeake—for natural resources, for safe passage, or for commercial opportunities. The exploration begins with European exploration in the 16th century, and continues with the growth of settlement in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries. Scientific surveying methods brought improved accuracy in the 19th century, and special purpose maps showing railroads or tourist routes and destinations proliferated in the 20th century. More recent decades have introduced satellite imagery, geographic information systems, and Google maps, which continue to change how we view and understand the Chesapeake Bay region.

Sep 6    High Tide in Dorchester film screening Sept. 6 at CBMM
Hear behind-the-scene stories and insights from the filmmakers as Tom Horton, Sandy Cannon-Brown, and David Harp share their newest collaboration, High Tide in Dorchester, with a special screening at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Thurs., Sept. 6, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

With a focus on Maryland’s Dorchester County, the film aims to foster and leverage into action a conversation about climate change and related impacts of sea level rise and erosion. The film looks closely at Dorchester’s Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, where scientists and managers are already dealing with the impacts of the rising tide.

Writer Tom Horton, filmmaker Sandy Cannon-Brown, and photographer David Harp first collaborated in 2015 to produce Beautiful Swimmers Revisited, a documentary inspired by William W. Warner's 1976 exploration of watermen, crabs, and the Chesapeake Bay. Beautiful Swimmers Revisited premiered in 2016 at the Carnegie Institution for Science’s Environmental Film Festival in Washington, D.C., and aired in that same year as part of Maryland Public Television’s Chesapeake Bay Week.

The cost to attend the screening is $10 per person, with a 20% discount for CBMM members. The screening takes place in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium, with limited seating, and advanced tickets and more information at cbmm.org/hightideindorchester.

“The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.”

The Forest of Arden comes alive in Brown Box Theatre Project’s 8th Annual Free Outdoor Shakespeare tour, As You Like It. When a motley cast of characters finds themselves banished from the court, misdirection, desire, and serendipity unite to form a tangled web of identity and love that could only be possible in this pastoral haven, where gender roles, politics, and expectations are turned upside-down. Performed under the stars in idyllic outdoor venues, As You Like It will transport audiences into the heart of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies in a can’t-miss multi-state tour.

Sep 29    Elf Classic Yacht Race features new course, date
The 8th annual Elf Classic Yacht Race has a new race course and date, with the rescheduled race now taking place on the Miles River in St. Michaels, Md. on Saturday, September 29, 2018. The annual race is sponsored by the Classic Yacht Restoration Guild and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

“The seven previous races were held in early May, with a start in Annapolis and a race across the Bay for a finish at CBMM,” said CYRG founder and Elf captain, Rick Carrion. “The 2018 event will take place exclusively on the Miles River, offering land and sea spectators at CBMM an unparalleled view of some of the most beautiful, classic sailing yachts.”

The September 29 race features a 19th century traditional yacht racing start, beginning with a captains meeting on land, followed by the boom of a cannon, signifying each captain’s mad dash to a tied-up dinghy, or tender. Next, the captains row out to their moored vessels and waiting crews, before tying up their tenders and raising anchor, with up to 30 yachts racing on the Miles River in a cloud of sail.

Race proceeds benefit CYRG and CBMM, where race participants will be greeted along CBMM’s Fogg’s Cove and the winners announced at a trophy reception later in the day. At 9:30 a.m., CBMM will offer a two-hour spectator cruise aboard its 1920 buyboat Winnie Estelle, with limited boarding and advanced registration at bit.ly/watchelf.

“Spectators and guests are welcome to watch this unique 10:00 a.m. start, and spend the day at CBMM to explore the world-renowned museum, while watching the race from shore,” said Carrion. “As the race ends, captains will anchor off Fogg’s Cove, and row to shore to sign the race log on CBMM’s Steamboat Building’s deck. A post-race reception and awards ceremony will then be held.”

Organized by CYRG, the race features America’s oldest active racing yacht, the 1888 Elf. Restored to historically accurate condition and re-launched in 2008, Elf is a Lawley-built 30-foot class cutter. Elf pioneered offshore yacht cruising in 1893 by being the first small craft to race round-trip from Marblehead, Mass. to Halifax, N.S.

To see a documentary and race footage of the Elf Classic, go to bit.ly/ElfClassic. For registration information, contact CYRG’s Rick Carrion at cyrg.elf@gmail.com or 443-566-2212. The racing fleet is limited, with early registration recommended, giving preference to wooden, classic, and traditional yachts.

CYRG is a non-profit, member organization dedicated to the preservation of maritime heritage through the maintenance and operation of Elf. She was designed by George Lawley & Sons of South Boston, Mass., and built in 1888 for William H. Wilkinson. Over the warmer months, she can be seen dockside at CBMM, and under sail along the Miles River and Chesapeake Bay.

Established in 1965, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a world-class maritime museum dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment and people of the entire Chesapeake Bay, with the values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship guiding its mission. Serving more than 70,000 guests each year, CBMM’s campus includes a floating fleet of historic boats and 12 exhibition buildings and historic structures. For more information, visit cbmm.org.
